DNA of the Artist

These small boxes of chewed American bubblegum came out of the video series “Empreintes d’Information / Information Trace.” On the plane to Paris I was reading a column in Cabinet that discussed David Serlin’s work and the notion of bodies leaving debris in cities and on objects. Most notably, it discussed the recovery of DNA from specimens of bubblegum embedded in the sidewalk. Taking this same idea into the realm of biotech and consumer culture, I placed these aesthetic little waste products in packages for sale to underline the commodification of the artist, and of the body itself.
